When selecting a headset, many manufacturers offer two different types: ANR (Active Noise Reduction) and PNR (Passive Noise Reduction).
Here's a basic description of each:
ANR Headsets (Active Noise Reduction) - ANR reduces the amount of background noise that gets to the wearer of the headset electronically. It does this by detecting the unwanted noise and creating inverse (opposite) sound waves to cancel out the noise. ANR headsets are clearly the quietest headsets available and depending on the aircraft, they can virtually eliminate all background noise.
PNR Headsets (Passive Noise Reduction) - PNR reduces the amount of background noise that gets to the wearer of the headset physically. Passive headsets rely on pressure and earseals to eliminate background noise.
