Garmin 496

The Garmin 496 allows pilots to fly smarter and safer. Similar to the 396, the Garmin 496 combines XM satellite weather with terrain alerting and a detailed color map, then combines it with high-end software and features. Known as the "know-it-all" mini-MFD because it puts more power and information at your fingertips - more than any other aviation portable handheld ever produced. The Garmin 496 is a "must have" for any pilot.

Taxiway Position

The Garmin 496 features Garmin's SafeTaxi data and provides positioning and detailed taxiway diagrams for over 650 U.S. airports. Preloaded on the 496, pilots can navigate unfamiliar airports and see their aircrafts exact position on the field.

AOPA Airport Directory

The Garmin 496 has the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Airport Directory included in it. Over 5,300 U.S. airports along with FBO, ground transportation, lodging, restaurants, local attractions and more are loaded in the 496.

Altitude-Sensitive Alerts

Garmin's new Smart Airspace, included in the Garmin 496, makes identifying what airspace that lies ahead while in flight easier than ever. Increased situational awareness is achieved because Smart Airspace automatically highlights airspace close to your current altitude and de-emphasizes airspace away from the current altitude.

Enjoy Faster Update Rate

The Garmin 496 updates map data and panel page instruments at 5 Hz giving pilots a smoother, almost real-time presentation of their aircraft's analog indicators - IE: HSI and Turn Coordinator.

Enhance Situational Awareness

Jeppesen database with U.S. obstacles and terrain are built into the Garmin 496. Using this information, the GPSMAP 496 displays your flight route over contour terrain mapping with even more visual reference and a higher-resolution terrain database that has over ten times as much data than the Garmin 396. To provide alerts, the Garmin 496 monitors your current position in relation to surrounding terrain using information from the terrain and U.S. obstacles database. The 496 even gives pilots the ability to customize their own minimum clearance levels to receive terrain cautions. The addition of private airports and heliports to the database provides even more navigation and emergency "nearest" options.

Add XM Weather, Radio and Traffic

The Garmin 496's optional services and sensors allow pilots to make informed decisions based on weather conditions and traffic. With a subscription to XM WX Satellite Weather and the included GXM 30A smart antenna, you’ll have access to constantly-updated, high-resolution weather data for the U.S, right in the cockpit. Weather information includes Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD), Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs), Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), Lightning and Winds Aloft and can be laid directly over the 496's Jeppesen and topographic map databases. With an additional monthly service fee, Garmin's 496 GXM 30A smart antenna delivers XM Satellite Radio to your aircraft. Add a Garmin Mode S transponder, and the Garmin 496 will also display TIS traffic alerts that identify surrounding air traffic.

Navigate by Air, Land or Sea

Garmin's GPSMAP 496 eliminates the need to ask for directions because it's preloaded with City Navigator NT street maps, including a hefty points of interest (POIs) database with motels, restaurants, fuel, ATMs and more. Simply enter a destination, and voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions will automatically guide you. In addition, Garmin 496 accepts customized points of interest such as school zones and safety cameras and includes proximity alerts to warn you of upcoming POIs. Add optional BlueChart g2 data cards, and turn the 496 into a color chartplotter.

"Garmin 496"
9/23/2008 by Paulette in North Carolina

I have owned 296 so I was pleased with the improved speed and data base of my new 496. The approaches were more comprehensive. The software is user friendly. The only problem I have encountered is the plug broke that attaches to the back of the unit to provide power. I´ll need to replace that. I hope it has a warranty. Tropic Aero is great to work with!

"Love it"
8/21/2008 by Myron in Illinois

From 196, to 296, to 496, it just keeps getting better! Basic operations remain the same so really nothing new to learn. Nexrad is awesome. Put it in the car and drove through some level 5, it was amazingly accurate.

"The Garmin 496 is fabulous!"
8/21/2008 by Dan in Washington

I recently upgraded my Garmin 196 to a Garmin 496 and am very pleased with the result. The capabilities of the 496 are outstanding and well worth the additional cost. I particularly like the XM weather capability and the fact that TFR´s are displayed when they are active. The Garmin 496 makes cross-country flights a joy. Great product!

"I don´t get lost on airports anymore"
8/20/2008 by Earle in Florida

I had hesitated upgrading from my 396 to the 496 untill I saw that Tropic Aero took trade ins. Then I had no excuses any more. I love the 496 which is quicker than the 396 and of course, has the airport diagrams. How can they put all this in such a small package for such a reasonable price?

"GPSMAP 496"
8/20/2008 by Tom in Arizona

Upgraded from a 396 and glad that I did. The taxi charts and having the ability to navigate to anyplace on the ground in a vehicle are wonderful features. Also, the AOPA directory makes finding FBO phone numbers, restaurants, lodging, etc. very easy. Had a problem with it but Garmin sent a new one quickly. Good service.

"Excellent GPS"
8/20/2008 by David in Maryland

I recently upgraded from the 396 to the 496 for the XM Weather. It was well worth it especially if you fly IFR. It is a very valuable tool to avoid weather. The weather updates from XM could be a little faster. The NEXRAD seem to take longer than 5 minutes to update at times, otherwise a very good product.

"Great Portable GPS!"
10/8/2007 by Chris in Florida

I recently upgraded to the Garmin 496 from the 296 and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. The additional features of the weather and taxiway positioning made it WELL worth the investment, especially considering the instability of Florida weather (the auto kit was a bonus for me). Throw in the fact that I was able to trade-in my Garmin 296 towards my purchase and it made it a no-brainer.
